POP UP Lab & Shop
of traditional Kyoto products

Kyoto—the ancient capital of Japan for over a thousand years—prospered as one of the richest cultural and artistic centers of the country. Blessed by the emperors who resided in Kyoto and invested extensively in the traditional Japanese crafts during this period, the city still remains home of many traditional companies that produce a diverse range of high quality arts and handicrafts with outstanding techniques and passionate devotion.

MAKER KAMER (maker's room) founded and based in Amsterdam, is a collaborative project to create a meeting place where traditional products from Kyoto and European creativity come together and everyone who is passionate about craftsmanship can talk, learn from and inspire one another. We tie up with various museums in Europe and host 'pop-up laboratories.' Our pop-up shop is designed to introduce you to the traditional products of Kyoto, and our workshops to demonstrate and teach you how they are made by our craftsmen from Kyoto. Also in collaboration with museums we created a platform for joint product development where we can together explore new artisanal products inspired by Japanese traditional techniques. Thanks to the feedback from local visitors and creators we successfully developed a number of new products after our first pop-up laboratory in 2016.

This year we will expand our activities beyond Amsterdam. Our aim is to further promote and connect our eleven long-established companies from Kyoto to more cities in Europe and to initiate developments of new products which marry Japanese traditional techniques and skills with European lifestyle and creativity. We will continue to offer opportunities for creative minds from both Europe and Japan to exchange ideas and skills.
